Louis Braillejaar - internationaal
In het kader van de 200ste geboortedag vanLouis Braille worden er door op internationaal niveau allerlei activiteiten, evenementen, acties, wedstrijden etcetera georganiseerd. Op het gedeelte van de site 'Louis Braille - internationaal' wordt een overzicht geboden van wat er aan activiteiten internationaal plaatsvindt.

Conferentie
In 2009 wordt het tweehonderdste geboortejaar van Louis Braille in Frankrijk gevierd met een internationale conferentie. De Association Valentin Haüy en het National Institute for the Young Blind zijn de organisatoren van deze internationale conferentie. De Association Valentin Haüy was niet alleen het instituut waar Louis Braille als blinde jongen les heeft gehad, maar later ook leraar is geweest in wiskunde, Frans, aardrijkskunde en natuurlijk braille zelf.
Sponsoren van de conferentie zijn: the World Blind Union, the CNPSAA (French National Committee for the Social Promotion of Blind and Partially Sighted People) en CINAL (International Committee for the Commemoration of the Bicentenary of Louis Braille’s Birthday). De conferentie vindt plaats in Parijs van 4 tot en met 8 januari 2009. Op het programma staan ondermeer: braille en de verschillende toepassingen (wiskinde, muziek, spelletjes etc.), braille in de wereld en in de verschillende talen en de toekomst verwachtingen van braille.

Dictee wedstrijd
The Magic Stylus Dictation Contest 2008
For the 14th year running, the Magic Stylus Dictation Contest is organised by the Valentin Haüy Association (AVH), with the aim of promoting braille. French-speaking spelling and braille fanatics will be able to compete against each other. Lasting about an hour, the dictation will sort out lovers of spelling and raised dots. Candidates will be tested on two criteria: spelling and braille. The competition can be either in grade 1 or grade 2 braille, so that everyone can select the category they prefer. The prizes will this year only be awarded at UNESCO during the International Conference about Louis Braille on Wednesday the 8th January 2009. Numerous prizes ranging from 50 to 250 euros will be awarded.

Royal Blind services for the blindFirst Minister lends support to National Braille Week19/09/08 On a recent visit to the RoyalBlindSchool in Edinburgh, the First Minister Alex Salmond praised the work of Royal Blind and gave his support to National Braille Week 2009. National Braille Week was launched this year to celebrate all aspects of Braille and next year the event is scheduled to run from 4-10 January 2009 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Louis Braille (the inventor of Braille) and World Braille Day.
The launch included the development of this new website that allows visitors to discover interesting facts about Braille - how it was created and how it is used in the 21st century. The First Minister said: 'The Scottish Government is committed to creating a Scotland where all our people have the opportunity to realise their potential. It is important that everyone has equal opportunities and choices, this is why this Government funds the work of the RoyalBlindSchool and has increased the level of funding to disability led groups to £1.9m over the next three years 2008-2011.
'Braille is incredibly important in promoting literacy and independence among people who are blind or partially sighted. I am delighted to support Royal Blind in its work to increase awareness of Braille through National Braille Week 2009.'
Richard Hellewell, chief executive of Royal Blind commented: ‘We are delighted that the First Minister has given his support to National Braille Week. The ability to read and write in Braille is the single most important gateway to opportunity for the UK’s blind or partially sighted people. It is the building block of literacy which is the building block of independence. ‘People who are blind and know Braille are known to be more likely to be employed that those who rely on voice synthesizers. You wouldn’t tell a class of six year old children that they don’t need to learn to read any more because computers can do it for them. But every day, that’s what some people who are blind and visually impaired are told. People need to be literate, to read, write, count – in order to enjoy intellectual freedom, personal security and equal opportunities.
‘Braille is used all over the world but outside our community there is little knowledge or understanding about its use. Creating National Braille Week is a great way to raise awareness, which we hope will inspire interest and support for Braille.’

Internationaal schaaktournooi Edinburgh, 2 tot en met 5 januari 2009
Ter gelegenheid van het Louis Braillejaar (Louis Braille werd op 4 januari 1809 geboren) organiseert de Braille Chess Association uit Groot Brittannië een schaaktoernooi van 2 tot en met 5 januari 2009 in Edinburgh. Voor dit toernooi zijn zes Westeuropese landen uitgenodigd, waaronder Nederland. Elk van deze landen is gevraagd een schaakteam af te vaardigen van vier visueel gehandicapte spelers die alle vier hun partijen in braille noteren en van een een aangepast schaakbord met stukken en een aangepaste schaakklok gebruik maken. De NSVG (Nederlandse schaakvereniging van visueel gehandicapten) heeft besloten een team naar dit toernooi af te vaardigen. Dit team bestaat uit Jan Boer, Peter Witteveen, Cor Tesselaar en Martien Boerefijn.

Verenigde Staten
VS presenteren eerste braillemunt
In de VS is de eerste munt met leesbaar brailleschrift gepresenteerd. De munt wordt volgend jaar uitgegeven. Het is in 2009 tweehonderd jaar geleden dat Louis Braille, de uitvinder van het blindenschrift, werd geboren.
De 2009 Louis Braille Bicentennial Silver Dollar werd gepresenteerd door de directeur van de US Mint Ed Moy op een bijeenkomst van de Nationale Blinden Federatie.
Op de voorzijde van de zilveren dollar is het portret van Louis Braille te zien. Op de keerzijde is een schooljongen die een brailleboek leest afgebeeld, en is in brailleschrift het woord braille te lezen.
De 1 ounce (31,1 gram) wegende munt wordt in het voorjaar van 2009 uitgegeven in een oplage van 400.000 stuks. Op elke munt zit een toeslag van 10 dollar ten bate van onderwijsprogramma's voor blinden.
